Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Open House

Hayride and Trail

The research center is quite large, and to make it easier for visitors to get around, they had several hay wagons pulled by tractors. (They only do this during the Open House.)   A view of the tractor while I was riding on the hay wagon.

If you felt like walking, you could stroll through beautiful woods. Before SERC acquired the property (through a generous bequest) most of the land was part of a dairy farm.

The property has a few nature trails that are open to the public during regular center operating hours. This view of the Rhode River is from the Connection Trail, which connects the Java History Trail to Fox Point Road.   The trail also passes across a marsh on a boardwalk, with a raised observation area.

The trail started near a field where musicians were playing (these are SERC employees). You can click on this picture to enlarge it; use your browser's "back" command to return here.
