Sailing to the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean 1500

Visiting Road Town: Botanic Garden (continued)

Artocarpus heterophyllus, also known as Jackfruit. The fruit of this relative of the breadfruit is edible, and is the largest fruit that grows on a tree (up to 80 lbs).   These look like more bromeliads.

Piper nigrum, also known as Black Pepper. The ordinary spice is produced by grinding the dried seeds of the plant (this one didn't have any seeds). There was a patient lizard on the sign who posed for a close up. Click on the right-hand picture to see a bigger version; use your browser's "back" command to return here.

Alpinia purpurata, also known as Red Ginger. Although this is a relative of the plant that produces ginger, these plants are purely ornamental and don't have edible parts. This might be Colocasia esculenta, also known as Elephant Ear. There are several similar species with giant leaves that are all generically called Elephant Ear.   A banyan tree, which is a species of fig that grows by sending down aerial roots.
