Sailing to the Galápagos Archipelago

Galápagos Passage Summary

Two views of the anchorage in Academy Bay, looking towards Puerto Ayora from the anchored Nine of Cups.

Here's a summary of our passage to the Galápagos:

We left Puerto Lucia at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, March 24, and anchored in Academy Bay at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, March 29. Thus, the passage took six calendar days, but the total time on-passage was only 123 hours, which is just over five 24-hour days. (If you compute the number of hours, you'll note that it comes to 122 hours, but we crossed a time zone so it becomes 123 hours.)

We motored (or motorsailed) for 72 hours, which is about 60% of the time.

The total mileage was 604 nautical miles, with the following daily mileage:

Day 1 - 78 nm (partial day)
Day 2 - 138 nm
Day 3 - 140 nm
Day 4 - 117 nm
Day 5 - 113 nm
Day 6 - 18 nm (partial day)

The adventure continues in the next section as we visit and explore three fascinating islands in the Galápagos Archipelago.
