This is the birthday card I received from Marcie, David, and Jelly. |
Thursday April 22, 2004 (Day 25 in the Galápagos Archipelago, My Birthday)
Today is my birthday (I turn 52) and I'll get to celebrate it in an exotic location. David was the first to wish me Happy Birthday, at literally a few seconds past midnight when he came on watch last night. I slept surprisingly well because there was very little rolling, and when I went topsides this morning for my 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon watch, Marcie promptly sang "Happy Birthday".
We had been discussing birthdays recently and I had mentioned a birthday ritual when I was growing up: the birthday person gets to request their favorite food for dinner. Marcie agreed to go along with the ritual so I asked for hamburgers; she'll make them tonight once we arrive at Isla Floreana. Marcie also had asked about a birthday cake and I suggested a carrot cake; we'll have that tonight, too. Because it's difficult to bake a cake on a moving boat Marcie will bake cupcakes instead.
I know David has been making me a belt as a present because I've already had a trial fitting. I didn't bring a belt since I don't usually wear one, but I've lost enough weight that my pants are loose. I saw a few belts here in Ecuador, but Ecuadorian men are small and I'm not, so none of the belts fit. One of David's hobbies is nautical knot-tying so he's making the belt using a special knot-tying pattern from one of his books.
