Last night was very warm and muggy, and it was uncomfortable sleeping even using the cabin fan. Poor Jesse volunteered to sleep on the settee without even a sheet or a pillow; he said he hardly got any sleep. This morning, the sun was already very warm with lots of haze around the horizon, the kind of morning that promises a scorcher of an afternoon. As usual, I put on lots of sunscreen, but putting on heavy sunscreen is like smearing yourself with Elmer's glue. It might protect you from the sun but it can feel totally gross.

We had a quick breakfast, then upped anchor and got underway just after 7:00 am, motoring out of Whitehall Bay. After skirting the large shoal at the mouth of the bay, we turned northeast and headed out onto the bay. Although the Bay Bridges were close at hand, they were indistinct in the heavy morning haze. After passing under the bridges, we headed up the bay towards Tolchester Channel in the distance. This channel will take us up the eastern edge of the bay toward the head of the bay and the Elk River, which is our destination for tonight.
